This action plan for the organization and technical improvement of the aggregates sector has been developed by ANEFA and the Official Laboratory for Testing Construction Materials – LOEMCO is oriented to give some advise and recommendations to company owners and managers in order to be able to adopt decisions that start an improvement of the competitiveness of the aggregates companies and their sites and treatment plants.
LafargeHolcim Central Lab. How to turn residues into resources
An approach to alternative fuels and raw materials, their essential control and knowledge as a contribution of the cement industry to the construction of a society based on circular economy. The technological revolution that we are experiencing increasingly demands a large amount of resources while generating large amounts of waste. Such waste can be seen as an opportunity, as it is a source of energy and alternative raw material.
The use of this kind of materials requires an additional effort in control and security to guaranteed an effi cient and safe use of these new resources. In order to increase control and safety in the use and manipulation of these materials, in 2015, an area dedicated exclusively to AFRs was set up in LafargeHolcim Central Quality Laboratory to increase knowledge and control over these materials and to exploit their potential to the maximum.

Robust RDF processing for tough materials
Since 1969 Vecoplan AG has designed, engineered, manufactured, and commissioned machines and systems that process several materials in production, recycling and preparation of Alternative Fuels (AF).
The efficient recovery and recycling of residual materials from residual and industrial waste requires state-of-the art environmental technologies, which can only be achieved through a combination of skill and knowledge in engineering, research and development.
The system capabilities include unloading of raw feed-stocks, pre-shredding, ferrous and non-ferrous separation, conveying, screening, air classifi cation, re-shredding, sampling stations, storage-systems, and delivery of alternative fuels to preheater tower or main burner platforms of cement kilns. Based in Bad Marienberg, Germany, Vecoplan supplies its equipment and systems all over the world. The Systems can be found in sophisticated, commercial scale plants as well as directly in the Cement industry.

One of the cleanest cement plants in the world
Kirchdorfer Zementwerk describes itself as one of the cleanest cement plants in the world. Proof of this claim made by the Upper Austrian industrial enterprise is found in the world’s first DeCONOx plant. The new system from Scheuch is ahead of the industry standard and is setting new benchmarks in environmental technology.
Evaluation of alkali-aggregate reaction: Possibility and limitations of available test method
The evaluation of the potential for alkali reactivity of concrete aggregates may be a very complex task and there are a lot test methods to do that. As these methods often yield contradictory results, their interpretation should rest on the wise judgement of the concrete technologist.
This scenery is complicated as the norms and Argentinian regulations, having been developed at different times, have different evaluation criteria. Based on the authors experience and with the help of some examples, the advantages and limitations of the standardized test methods in Argentina are summarized. The expansion limits used to judge the alkali reactivity of aggregates are also revisited. Finally, a critical analysis of the current Argentinian standards situation (IRAM 1512, IRAM 1531, CIRSOC 201) is carried out in order to shed light on this matter.
Pollution derived from waste treatment. The role of the cement industry
The present work analyses some of the most important aspects related to the emission of pollutants in the cement industry, especially concerning the use of waste as alternative fuels. It underlines the importance of other sources of pollutants, as well as the fact that most of the emissions from burning waste comes from systems without temperature and oxygen control.

“Quarry Fall Protection System” proyect in the quarry of ‘La Utrera’ (Málaga)
In the 2016 edition of the European Awards for Sustainable Development, organized every year by UEPG (European Aggregates Association), FYM-HeidelbergCement Group has been awarded with the Best Practice in Labor Safety and Health for the project “Quarry Fall Protection System”.
The ceremony held in Brussels, at the Centre for Fine Arts - BOZAR, with an independent jury of experts that awarded this innovative system of protection designed by the workers of the FYM-HeidelbergCement Group from the quarry of ‘La Utrera’ in Málaga.
The “Quarry Fall Protection System” also received in 2015 the First FdA Award for Sustainable Development in the Social and Security Category organized by the National Aggregates Federation.
FYM-HeidelbergCement, in line with its the Zero Accidents Program, establishes every year objectives for the control and minimization of the risks which the workers are exposed during their daily activities.
More than 40 years of useful life in a Spanish motorway with continuous reinforced concrete pavement
The Asturias Y or Oviedo-Gijón-Avilés motorway has a high intensity traffic that exceeds 800 million vehicles (about 63 million are heavy vehicles). It was built on continuous reinforced concrete pavement PCHA 41 years ago (it was designed in the 1970s) and its pavement is in perfect conditions after that time.
The high cost of construction, compared to other bituminous solutions, has been compensated for the low maintenance costs. By this way, this reinforced concrete pavement has proven to have the best price-quality ratio, in addition to being the best solution from an economic (saving from 15 to 22 million euros), social (very low number of required maintenance operations) and environmental point of view (higher advantages in the lifecycle analysis).
