Biodiversity and the aggregates Industry
The correct management of geological resources allows the extractive activities to be compatible and to promote biodiversity, including protected areas.
In the field of biodiversity, the rehabilitation of sites during and at the end of the Project cycle is one of the ways used by the non-energy extractive industry to contribute to its conservation.
This article gathers examples of the initiatives developed by the Spanish and European associations to promote biodiversity in aggregates sites.
Quantification of cement content in mortars and concretes
This work summarizes the researches related to the compounds that selectively stains the cement paste, leaving the aggregate unchanged, and that are used in the quantification of cement in mortars and concretes. In the fi rst place, the products developed in the period between 1999 and 2000 are described, within a research project financed, in part, by the Spanish Institute of Cement and its Applications (IECA). Finally, an example that is part of the current works is shown, in which the selective staining solutions could be innocuous pH indicators on which I have been working in recent years.
KPIs for the correct choice of filtering media
The choice of which fabric to use in a particle collector facility is not trivial at all. Identifying the issues that can come from the filter conditions is vital to the decision-making process that will not only provide chrematistic benefits but also a series of intangibles as well as added value to the product itself. In this paper we offer an approach on the elements to be identified, beyond the adequate advice by the engineering-bag manufacturer tandem.
Through wild nature and populated regions
Sichuan Yadong Cement Co, Ltd. in Pengzhou, China, has been relying on a 12.5 km overland conveyor from BEUMER Group in order to convey limestone from their quarry to their silo. When constructed in 2009 it was the longest belt conveying system in BEUMER history (BEUMER installed a longer system in 2016). The troughed belt conveyor runs through hilly terrain and nature reserves, over streams and unstable ground. The second project includes two additional overland conveyors, with an overall length of 13.7 kilometres, transporting limestone to the cement plant. Unlike the first project, the task here was to build the conveyor across inhabited areas. Noise emission limitations set forth by the government also needed to be considered.

Concrete for architectural walls
Aesthetics in architecture is becoming more and more relevant when designing buildings. New architectural finishings are sought with different textures and colors and not only for singular buildings.
However, it is quite frequent to find exposed concrete walls of poor quality, with bugholes, misalignment or lack of uniformity in color.
Concrete is a key factor to achieve a high-quality finishing. Architectural fi nishings are only possible when suitable concretes are used, careful pouring is carried out and proper curing is undertaken. And last, but not least, it must be pointed out the importance of formwork, its flatness and tightness.
Only fulfilling all these requirements, an optimal result will be achieved.
Recycling and waste recovery in the Spanish cement industry (update year 2016)
This is the eighth update of the study 'Recycling and waste recovery in the Spanish cement industry', carried out by Institut Cerdà, that shows the evolution of energy and material valorization in cement plants in the last years. The regular updating of the study has the objective to become a permanent observatory regarding the situation of the cement plants that have environmental authorizations for waste valorization and, at the same time, to carry out the recycling and waste recovery inventory in the Spanish cement plants.
Load beraing masnory: the building technique used in Brazil
Civil Engineering studies cover a broader range of topics in Brazil rather than in Spain. Brazilian civil engineers are responsiblefor the construction in public works as well as for buildings. While most of our university programs in this field offer about six credits in courses related to buildings, the credits increase up to 36 in Brazil universities. Load bearing masonry lessons are among the academic training they receive, a technique that it is replaced by the reinforced concrete system used for structural elements. This method is widely used all over the country due to a nonexistent seismic activity, yielding low production costs.
