ABSTRACT

Although it is a relatively small dam, 45 m in height and 80,000 m3 in concrete volume, 70,000 m3 being RCC, it was attempted to adapt both the design and the construction method to the requirements of the RCC technology in order to exploit the great advantages offered by it. Although the original design was already a straight gravity RCC dam type, when performing the definitive construction design some improvements were introduced in order to achieve an “RCC-friendly” design. As a consequence the new design, together with the optimization of the construction processes, enabled the contractor to place the RCC rapidly and efficiently, which led to a better execution quality, a schedule reduction and lower cost. In the paper, the plant and construction procedures implemented are also stated, which allowed the construction of the RCC dam body in only 53 working days within a whole period less than three months.
