ABSTRACT

The main target for a modern Maintenance Organisation is to maintain a high availability of the plant installations at a minimum of costs.

It is therefore decisive that this Organization be proactive in order to eliminate the root-causes, and not only arrange for repair of the symptoms as in this case the causes will persist. F.L. Smidth´s experience shows that 99% of break-downs of rotary kilns will be due to one or more of the following 4 root-causes: Kiln axis, Ovality, Crank or Axial Balance for which reason the popular "hot kiln alignment" does nos constitute any guarantee to unforeseen problems.

The serious kiln inspection will describe in detail the possible risks inherent to the combination of the physical condition of the machinery and of the operational conditions, including a comprehensive investigation of possible existence of root-causes.
